When Paul Richards announced he was leaving the Orioles for a front office job in the National League, Baltimore's owners quickly contacted and hired Billy Hitchcock. Billy had managed Vancouver i the Pacific Coast League in 1961 and the club finished second. The ex-major leaguer was a coach for the Detroit Tigers from 1955 through 1960. During his professional baseball career Billy played for the Tigers, the Senators, the old St. Louis Browns, the Red Sox and the Athletics. Able to play all four infield positions, he had his best year with the old Philadelphia A's in 1951 when he hit .306. Always known as a "smart baseball man," Billy has been in baseball since he broke into the minors in 1939. |
