Powering the PittsburghPirates to a third place finish in the National League last year, were teammates Donn Clendenon and Willie Stargell. Willie , a lefthanded batter hit .272 for the season. The most important number in his season's statistics was 107: his RBI total. The hard-hitting outfield was the team's leader with 27 home runs. A big left-handed batter, Willie began in pro ball in 1959. The Pirates' first sacker, Donn Clendenon had his peak year in the majors in 1965 when he hit a solid .301. Big Donn joined Pittsburgh in 1961 after compiling some sizzling minor league records. With Savannah in the Sally League in 1960, he was the homer king with 30 circuit clouts while compiling a .335 batting average. In 105 ballgames in the Pioneer League, Donn rocked the apple for a .356 clip. |
